SOU Amistad Program

The Amistad Program began unofficially in 1969, with the initial exchange of students from the UG and Southern Oregon College. On April 13, 1971, the Rector of the UG, Lic. Enrique Cardona Arizmendi, and the President of SOC, Dr. James K. Sours, signed a formal general agreement for academic and cultural exchanges between the two institutions. The Oregon State System of Higher Education approved the Amistad Program as a recognized study abroad program soon after the initial agreement was signed. The program is now in its 33rd year, and is one of the most successful exchange programs in the country, based on number of students exchanged and longevity of the program.

The Amistad Program is a year-long academic experience that allows for the exchange of students between the two schools. Southern Oregon University students receive credit at the UG that is applied to each one's undergraduate course of study at SOU; students from the UG most often have already completed the equivalent of the BA at the UG, and are enrolled in graduate programs at SOU.
